Ask families up and down the East Coast where they love to go each summer and more often than not you will hear, Virginia Beach. Although there is a thriving bar scene in this coastal town, there is loads for families to do, and is even safe enough to let your teens wander a bit with their friends, experiencing a taste of freedom they may not get on most vacations.
The beach calls to families, as the waves roll in and the sand heats up. Grab your perfect spot by the water's edge and set up camp for the day in front of your hotel. There is a main boardwalk that runs along the beach with more hotels than you can count behind it. Most do have pools that you can cool off in if the surf gets a bit rough.
Off the beach you will have more than enough to amuse everyone in your family. Outdoor concerts, frozen custard and ice cream, an aquarium filled with creatures and artists showing off bring lighthearted fun to your vacation, where you really don't have to think, you just sit back and enjoy. Virginia Beach is here to entertain you. Don't miss a minute of it.
Beach Street USA and Concert Series
Every summer Virginia Beach welcomes artists to their streets and outdoor concert venues. Street musicians, artists and magicians perform their talents on specific street corners each night. Bands are regularly booked at the outdoor concert venues littered down Atlantic Avenue, the main drag through town. Cover bands, and even bigger bands like Toad the Wet Sprocket have performed here in the past. Families are definitely welcome, and dancing is always encouraged.
Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center
Rainy days do happen, even at the beach. If the rain, or the hot midday sun, has you running for cover, drive down to the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, located just a few miles outside of town. This small, yet impressive aquarium is home to turtles, sharks, sea horses, birds and one very cool submarine. Kids can jump into a piece of a submarine to push every button imaginable, move the underwater cameras to find buried treasure and watch sharks swim overhead. Don't worry parents; no SCUBA certification is required. You can sit on the steps in the large viewing area while your kids run back and forth from the sub.
Frozen custard, pizza and more
What's a beach without some good grub? Kohr Brothers Frozen Yogurt seems to have a location every few blocks down Atlantic Avenue, so you never have to walk far to get a delicious twist of flavors, or single flavor in a cone smothered in chocolate sprinkles. Pi-ZZERIA is a great spot to grab a pie or some pasta with friends and family. If you are in the mood for BBQ, head off the strip to Beach Bully's for fast BBQ served up hot and fresh every day.
