Eating Your Way Around Berlin

Currywurst is a fast food dish of German origin

They say the best way to experience a culture is through your stomach. If you’re looking to go on a culinary adventure, heading to diverse Berlin, Germany will hit the spot. Here are a few favorite haunts that locals love and will keep you returning for more.

Traditional German at Tiergarten Quelle

Bachstraße, 10555 Berlin, Germany

This hidden establishment is found tucked away under the Berlin - Tiergarten S-Bahn stop. While it may look a bit ancient on the outside, delicious traditional German fare awaits you on the inside. Hearty dishes include goulash, spatzle and ham hocks the size of basketballs. Locals and tourists alike visit this home-style restaurant. Remember to wear big pants coming in because you will not leave hungry.

Turkish Delights at Mustafa's Gemüse Kebap

Mehringdamm 32, 10961 Berlin, Germany

Did you know that Berlin has a huge Turkish population? Donor kebabs have taken the country by storm and is one of Germany’s favorite dishes. This can easily be seen at the popular food stall, Mustafa’s. People from all over the city will stand in line for well over an hour to get a taste of the freshly made kebap or kebab (which can be made from veal, turkey, lamb, or chicken) in a durum or donor filled with cucumber, feta, onions, squash, lettuce and various yogurt sauces. It is definitely worth the wait.

Berlin’s Favorite Snack at Curry 36

Mehringdamm 36, 10961 Berlin, Germany

Thanks to Herta Heuwer’s quick thinking in a time of food rations in 1949, Currywurst quickly became the preferred hangover cure. A Berlin staple, Curry 36 has carried on the proud tradition of serving fried sausage and fries slathered in curry and ketchup to hordes of hungry people every day.

The Name Says It All at Burgermeister

Oberbaumstraße 8, 10997 Berlin, Germany

Found in bustling, hip Kreuzberg, this burger stall can be found under the Schlesisches Tor U-Bahn stop. Locals will claim that they are serving up some of the best burgers in the city with nothing but the freshest ingredients. While the line may be long, these guys are no stranger to getting their customers in and out quickly. Menu items include hamburgers, cheeseburgers, BBQ burgers, and chili cheese fries.

Roasted Chicken at Hühnerhaus

Görlitzer Straße 1, 10997 Berlin, Germany

Located in Görlitzer Park, Hühnerhaus (or Hen House in English) is a Berlin institution and is known for the juiciest and cheapest rotisserie chicken. Young, old, rich, and poor, everyone finds themselves at this restaurant. For around €2, you can be the proud owner of a savory half chicken. Sides include salads, rice, and french fries. Grab a quick bite to eat before heading to the park!

Which of these classic Berlin meals do you want to try first?
