Best Places to Dive On the Riviera Maya

Pick one of these diving spots on Mexico's Riviera Maya for a truly memorable experience.

Turquoise waters, white sand beaches, great food, and beautiful scenery; the Riviera Maya is no stranger to being one of the major travel hot spots throughout Mexico. For divers, this beautiful landscape is just as fascinating underwater while providing some of the best diving in the world. Here are a few of the best dives found on the Riviera Maya.

Cozumel: Drift Dives

People travel to Cozumel from across the globe to experience their crystal clear waters and the well-known drift dives that occur in this region. Filled with colorful coral, the Santa Rosa Wall is one of the most popular dives spots. With one side being a sheer drop off into the ocean and the other filled with moray eels, seahorses, sea turtles, and nurse sharks, it is a feast for your eyes and senses.

Cenotes: Cenote Dos Ojos

One of the biggest underwater cave systems in the world, the cenote Dos Ojos (“Two Eyes”) will provide an otherworldly diving experience. Views include stalactites, stalagmites, dazzling displays of light shafts, and a bat cave. While this cave can be snorkeled in, the entrance to the second eye can best be reached through the world of scuba. Note: This is a freshwater dive so plan accordingly.

Playa del Carmen: Whale Shark Season

From May to September, the Riviera Maya becomes flooded with whale shark fanatics. Why, you ask? Hundreds of the biggest fish in the world flock to the Mexican Caribbean for the summer feeding season. Due to the growing popularity of this tourist adventure, the government has enacted serious conservation laws to protect the whale sharks and give them their space. While this may not technically be a dive, people are encouraged to snorkel (and freedive!) with these massive sea beasts.

Diving experiences can vary quite a bit on the Riviera Maya. From more advanced dives to laid back snorkeling experiences, there is an experience for everyone. Have you been to the Riviera Maya? Comment below and let us know what dives have been your favorites!
