A First Timer's Guide To Lucha Libre Wrestling

You've seen it represented in mainstream culture: glittery masks and oh-so-tight leotard clad men being tossed around a wrestling ring. In Mexico, lucha libre is enjoyed by millions and taken rather seriously. If you’re heading for a night out to enjoy this national pastime, there are a few things you should know as a first timer.

If you sit too closely, you may lose your seat.

While being ringside will give you a great view of the fight, keep in mind that many of these guys go flying over the ropes into the audience. In some circumstances, your seat may even be used as a weapon and shattered over the head of the opponent. If you pick a close seat, just be prepared to find a new one.

Many official fights don’t allow camera.

If you head to some of the big name fights, there is a strict no camera policy in place. Leave your cameras at home or expect to check them at the door. Many times they are protecting the identity of their wrestlers. This is taken so seriously that if a luchador (wrestler) loses their mask at a big fight, then his career may be over.

It is kid-friendly.

Not only do the wrestlers sign autographs for children but sometimes there is designated “ring time” for kids who wish to climb in and pretend to be their favorite luchador. Many kids come dressed in costumes and masks to cheer on their favorite athletes!

Get rowdy like everyone else for a good time.

Hoot and holler with the best of them. This sport is the second most watched sport in Mexico so take a moment and get lost in the energy and chaos of the arena. It will be easy to pick out who is the “good” guy and who is the “bad” guy. Choose your favorite and cheer them on!

If you're looking for a unique cultural experience in Mexico, head out to a lucha libre match. Appropriate for all ages, it will definitely be a memorable adventure.
