It’s big. It’s crowded. It’s one of the most important conferences in the world for multimedia, film, and music. South By Southwest or SXSW requires quite a bit of know-how in order to get the most out of it. Here are a few tips to help you during your next SXSW experience.

Reserve your hotel early.

If you’re thinking about heading to SXSW at any point of the year, make sure to reserve your hotel as soon as possible. Accommodations tend to fill up to 6 months in advance. If you would like to be near all the buzz, it is important to jump on that opportunity.

Plan, plan, plan.

Know where your hotel is. Know where the music, films, and panels you would like to see are. Create a potential schedule and try to stick to it. SXSW is a massive event and you are going to miss 99% of it. Have some sort of plan and know that it will probably change anyway.

Patience is a virtue.

30,000 other people are also trying to get around Austin to see their planned activities. Leave early and expect to wait. Strike up a conversation with the person next to you. You never know who is attending!

Dress comfortably.

March in Austin can either be really cold or really hot. T-shirts, jeans, comfortable shoes, a jacket and an umbrella are must in this microclimate area. You never know what the weather can be like when walking around for 12+ hours a day.

Bring your power cords.

Between your Instagram updates and Facebook statuses, you’re going to drain your batteries pretty quickly. Make sure to bring your power supplies as many companies provide power stations throughout the conference to charge up your tech goodies.

Eat at food trucks.

Austin is undergoing a massive food renaissance. While out and about, take advantage of mobile food stations to keep you satiated and ready to conquer SXSW. With 30,000 extra people packed into restaurants, this will be your quickest and easiest option.

Do you think you are ready? Have you been to SXSW before? What tips do you suggest?
