Best Weekend Getaways in New York

New York is a fantastic city. The Big Apple is a city that never sleeps; there is always something happening from the lights of Broadway to the Statue of Liberty. However, sometimes we want to take our family on a mini-vacation to explore nature and nearby cities. Here are some of the best weekend getaways from New York.

Hudson, New York

There are two significant reasons to take a weekend getaway to Hudson. First is the food. The city is filled with excellent restaurants that fill the air with the smell of mouth-watering delights. The major problem you will have in Hudson is not finding a good place to eat, but deciding on which restaurants to visit. It is no surprise that foodies flock here for a weekend getaway.

Restaurants like The Barlow, Swoon Kitchen, Red Dot, and the Crimson Sparrow are a few of the local hotspots. Many of them change their menu regularly meaning that each weekend offers something new and exciting. If you are looking for a food getaway, then Hudson should be your first choice.

Of course, food is not the only reason to visit Hudson. There is also the incredible landscape and outdoor adventures. As you have probably already deduced from the name, Hudson is set in the scenic Hudson Valley. The valley has over 150 miles of beautiful countryside to explore, with offers outdoor activities including hiking, canoeing, and camping. The breathtaking beauty and the delicious food easily make Hudson one of the best weekend getaways from New York.

Atlantic City, New Jersey

Only 125 miles from New York City is a city that is famous for its nightlife, boardwalk, and casinos. Atlantic City packs the same electrifying atmosphere of Sin City without having to head out west.  Casinos line the 4-mile boardwalk. Celebrity headliners like Tony Bennett take to the stage and 3D light shows project on the lively streets.

One perk that Atlantic City has over Vegas is its white sandy beach. There is never a dull moment making it the perfect getaway for a group of friends or parents looking for an electrifying weekend away from the kids.

Newport, Rhode Island

Lying on the Atlantic Ocean is the picturesque seaside town of Newport. Quaint seafood restaurants, tiny shops, and hole in the wall bars line the downtown streets and the wharf. Newport is a favorite port of sailors and hundreds of boats dock around the area. The city has a small town atmosphere but draws large crowds of visitors.

A couple of the favorite attractions are day sailing on tall ships and exploring the old fort. If you time your visit right, you can see the insanely fast ships of the Volo Ocean Race which stops in the town on their journey around the world.

New Paltz, New York

New Paltz is a wonderful getaway with stunning forests and sheer bluffs looming above a rushing river. It is also a historic site; New Paltz was settled in the 17th century and some of these buildings remain today.

The nearby Mohonk Reserve has a variety of outdoor adventures like biking and hiking trails, mountain climbing, and cross-country ski slopes. Less than two hours from New York this town packs history, nature, and a stunning riverside city all in one spot making for a fun outdoor getaway.

Allentown, Pennsylvania

Less than two hours from New York, Allentown has everything a family needs for a fun weekend escape. The town has Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom that has plenty of thrilling slides, water rides, and roller coasters.

There is also the Crayola Experience that lets kids shop the most extensive selection of crayons in the world. They can even try their hand at creating their own type of crayons. For the adults, there is Allentown Brew Works, a trendy stop for sampling the excellent local beers.

Shelter Island, New York

Our final weekend getaway from New York is Shelter Island, which offers thousands of acres of forest, fields, coastline, and creeks. Visitors can chart their own path and make their own adventures throughout this vast wilderness.

If you would rather stick to the beaten path there are many popular things to do like mountaineering, hanging on the beach, and bird watching. The island also has historical plantations that offer a small glimpse into the past.
