Mountain, City or Beach: You’ve Got Spring Break Options

Spring Break is upon us and you still don’t have any plans. Don’t worry, neither do I. You have options to consider, budgets to figure out and kids to convince to get out the door and have some fun. While we can’t help you with your kids or figure out the household budget for you, we can break down your options and help you pick the best Spring Break destination this year.

Mountain

Spring is the perfect time for snow bunnies to pack up their ski and snowboard gear to hit the slopes. Look towards your local mountains for weekday savings, as not all school districts have off at the same time. If you don’t live within driving distance of snow, check SkyScanner.com for flights to your favorite mountain destination. Park City, Utah recently became home to the largest ski resort in the nation. Now is the time to check out all of the added slopes and amenities before the rest of the country figures out that this is the place to be, whether your kids want to hit the slopes or not.

City

Whether your live in a city or not, there is always more to see and do in a bustling metropolis. Take the time to explore your own city, or travel to any number of beautiful urban landscapes. Drive to New York City, take the train to Washington DC, fly to Los Angeles or Chicago. If you really want to go all out, hop over the pond to Europe to show your kids history that outdates anything in the U.S. by at least a few hundred years, if not a thousand or two. Research the free museums, best parks and new dining experiences to make this a trip the whole family will remember. Rent a short-term apartment to get the most bang for your buck in the center of all the action the city has to offer.

Beach

Spring Break screams beach for many families, especially if you live in a cold wintry climate. The sands of Mexico, Florida and Hawaii are calling your name and it is hard to ignore that cry. Teach your kids how to snorkel, inhale some of the best fish tacos on the planet, or just soak up some vitamin D while reading your book on the beach all day. Just don’t forget your sunscreen. Those harsh sun rays don’t mess around and can cause skin cancer. Rent a car so you can get to the best beaches no matter where you visit. Hawaii has several "secret beaches" worth looking for, and a car will give you the freedom to mix with the locals to find out their favorite spots to eat, swim and play.

No matter your budget, and no matter your interest, there is always something to do over Spring Break. The option to stay local or drive can save you big money on plane tickets, but if you have the cash to splurge, think about using this week to show your kids a new part of the world. The stories they will be able to tell their friends after the break will be worth more than any plane ticket cost.
