You might be considering some fun activities to keep your teenager busy this summer and you know that a camp won’t cut it. What about doing an adventurous trip? Whether it’s just for your teen or the entire family, here are a few trip ideas that will definitely make the summer stand out and give everyone lots of new experiences to share.
If you love biking, this might be a great option for you. There are many organized trips where you can bike for a series of days and stay overnight in hostels and campsites along the way. A good example is TeenTreks.com, which has trips ranging from easy –biking 15 to 25 miles a day from Niagara to Toronto– to challenging –biking from 60 to 100 miles a day, crossing the entire USA. These trips are done along safe roads and bike paths that pass through various interesting sights and monuments that show the history and culture of the area.
Wilderness hiking trips are not only adventurous, but they are some of the best ways to get off-the-beaten-path to see some of the most beautiful and unspoilt places on earth. These often extend for several days so you can explore more than just a normal hike. From lakes, to waterfalls, to high peaks, and wild animals, wilderness hiking does provide a way to go deeper into nature to experience life at a slower pace while still being adventurous.
Whether you prefer to go hiking in the Appalachian Mountains in the US, the Alps in Europe, or the Andes in South America; make sure you never go hiking alone and that you do it with an experienced guide or with a tour targeted to your interests.
What about having an adventure while doing some good? A volunteering trip might not only help you travel to places in this world you wouldn’t normally visit (a big plus for an adventurous experience), but also help you grow by showing you a different perspective of this world, its different cultures, and its current situations. Companies like Adventures Cross-Country and many others help you visit different regions all around the world to help make a difference while having the adventure of a lifetime.
Volunteering options range from helping at animal orphanages, wilderness conservation, building refuges, teaching English, cultural exchange, and more.
This option is recommended for the more adventurous and older teenagers (18 years+) who would like to experience life on the road for a while. Europe is a popular continent for first time backpackers since it has a great transportation infrastructure, a wide selection of cheap hostels, lots of cultural and outdoor attractions, and is nothing short of an adventure when you’re doing it on your own or with friends.
If you still like the idea of backpacking Europe (or any country on any other continent) but are not too sure about doing it on your own, there are many tour companies that cater to teenagers and young adults who are interested in having the backpacking experience without having to plan everything or be on their own the whole time.
No matter which type of adventurous activity you choose, make sure you do it in a safe manner and that you are well covered with a good adventure travel insurance policy.
