Exploring The Best of New York City on Foot

New York City is quite walkable and easy to explore on foot. Visit these spots to make the most of your visit.

You have finally arrived to one of the greatest cities on the planet - New York City! With how huge this expansive metropolis is, where do you even start? Taxis are on the pricier side, but there are other ways to get to see some of the iconic NYC highlights. Here is a list of places you can discover while in New York on foot.

The Highline

Built on an old elevated railway in Manhattan, this one mile park in the Meatpacking District and West Chelsea neighborhoods has been repurposed and redesigned to be a great way to get away from it all, while still being in the thick of the action. Visitors can enjoy the gardens, look at urban art installments, and enjoy food trucks while strolling along the path. The park can be picked up at either end via the blue ACE lines at the 14th or 34th/Penn Station stops.

Rockefeller Center

Comprised of 19 buildings, this enormous plaza houses sites that are on most people’s bucket lists. Highlights include “30 Rock” (GE Building), Radio City Music Hall, and The Rink at Rockefeller Center. The closest subway station is the Rockefeller Center stop on the orange BDFM lines.

Times Square

Located not too far from Rockefeller Center, Times Square is often referred to the Crossroads of the World. A major commercial area, the heart of NYC is also home to the bright lights and glam of Broadway. Check off the World’s Most Visited Attraction from your list by either walking from the Rockefeller area or hopping on the yellow NQR subway lines at 49th.

Central Park

If you’re looking for an adventurous day in the park, this 840-acre park will keep you busy. Spend the day renting a kayak, taking a carriage ride, riding the Central Park Carousel, visiting the Central Park Zoo, ice skating on the rink during the winter or perusing the Victorian Gardens in the summer. While walking the entire length of the park is possible, there are many different subway stops on the western side of the park (including the blue AC and orange BD lines).

Empire State Building

No visit to NYC is complete without heading to the Empire State Building. Take an elevator to the observatory to experience one of the most iconic views of New York’s skyline from 1250 feet. Hop on the orange BDFM or yellow NQR lines to the 34th Street - Harold Square station.

What are some of your favorite locations to discover in New York on foot?
