Five Fun Trip Ideas With A History Focus

Historical vacations help you develop a deep love and appreciation of the past, which will last long after the vacation has ended. America has some incredible historical vacation destinations that teach history in a fun and exciting way, including these favorites.

Gettysburg, PA

Gettysburg was one of the most significant battles in our nation's history, and it is the battle that turned the tide of the Civil War. This is the place where Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address that affirmed the principle that all men are created equal.

Even though Gettysburg has a tragic story, it is important to learn about the events that happened on this hallowed ground. This is a great family-friendly historical holiday for a few reasons. Start at the museum to get a feel for the massive three-day battle. A film, narrated by none other than Morgan Freeman, showcases the struggle between our divided nation.

A thrilling three-day reenactment of the battles occurs during the first week of July. Hundreds of soldiers reenact famous moments like Pickett's Charge. Kids can run around on the rocks of Devil's Den and Little Round Top, letting their imaginations run wild. I still remember my family trips to Gettysburg and their significance has never left me. This history-focused trip is fun and will give your kids a unique perspective on the Civil War.

Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia is arguably the most important historical city in America. Inside Independence Hall is where our country was born. It is here our founding fathers wrote and signed the Declaration of Independence. Afterwards, our Constitution was also formed inside its walls. It is humbling to stand in the shadows of our nation's greatest heroes.

Independence Hall is the main highlight of any historical trip to Philadelphia. However, the city has more fun and historical spots like the Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross house, and the Benjamin Franklin Museum.

Philadelphia is a prime spot for a historical vacation and also a great city to explore in its own right.

Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. is flooded with art, monuments, and museums highlighting important achievements and people throughout American history.

A couple of the main historical sites in Washington D.C. are the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and The Declaration of Independence. The Smithsonian Institution is the largest museum system in the world and holds much more than American history. The museum has exciting artifacts and exhibitions from all over the world. There is always something for your family to experience and enjoy in our Nation's Capital.

If you are looking for the best view of the city, head to the top of the Washington Monument. It gives you a beautiful birds-eye view of the entire city.

Colonial Williamsburg, VA

This historical trip lets your family truly live history. Colonial Williamsburg is a doorway into the world of the colonial era. There are actors roaming the cobblestone streets that refuse to break character. Your family will have a blast exploring over sixteen trade shops including blacksmiths, wig makers, candle makers, markets and bakeries.

Plus, there are over thirty-five historical exhibitions and a hundred gardens. There is so much to see and explore that your family will need a few days. Colonial Williamsburg ignites your love for history and captures the era perfectly.

Another perk is that there are a couple of theme parks not too far away if you need a break from colonial life.

Sacramento, CA

The building of the railroad, expansion of the West, and the craze of the gold rush were all paramount events in American history. One of the best places to learn about this period is in Sacramento, California. Pay a visit to Sutter's Fort; the first place where gold was discovered and learn about the history of the Wild West.

Sacramento has plenty of museums including the Railroad Museum and the Indian Museum. One not to miss destination is Old Sacramento State Park that is a collection of historical buildings, trains and wagons that transport you back in time.
